The boys from Peet’s Coffee Racing were at it again. This time during the 2017 Snelling Road Race Master’s 45+ 1/2/3 race. Starting a six man team of Chris Ott, Michael O’Rourke, current National Road Race Champion Nick Theobald, John Coletta, Dean LaBerge and senior statesman, 16 time National Champion Kevin Metcalfe. Peet’s was up against a strong field that included racers from CoreTechs Cycling TwT. So this race is never easy.
Early on the field took jabs at each other with various attacks. Then a two man breakaway of Metcalfe and Phil Malaspina of CoreTechs Cycling TwT was established. The two worked together to maintain their gap for most of the race. Kevin is an amazing athlete, often competing against racers ten or more years his junior. Once he locks into TT mode and he is tough to stay with. This finally dropped Malaspina on the final climb and Metcalfe rode on to the solo victory.
In a bunch sprint, Shawn Bagley of CoreTechs Cycling TwT finished 2nd followed by Sean Haider of Schnur Racing, Chris Ott of Peet’s Coffee Racing and Andrew Adelman of CoreTechs Cycling TwT rounding out the top 5.
Following the race Kevin said “his fitness was good going in with a lot of roller hours under his belt this winter”. The race set up well for him and he hammered down the win in fine fashion. Job well done.
