Rissveds Wins At Sea Otter Classic

2017 Sea Otter Classic: Women's Professional Short Track Race

The 2017 Sea Otter Classic gave me an opportunity to shoot styles of bike racing I don’t normally cover. So the Women’s Pro Short Track XC looked like a good place to start. Besides, when the field includes the Women’s Cross Country Olympic Champion, I’m in!

Shortly after the start, Jenny Rissveds of Scott-SRAM MTB Racing pushed the pace and broke away from the field. Joining her on the break was U23 National Champion and Northern California racer Kate Courtney of Specialized Factory Racing. The two continued to work together and built an insurmountable lead.

This dynamic duo entered the final lap together. The only thing in question was who would finish first? As they approached the final corner, Kate had unclipped according to the track announcer and Rissveds finished solo for the win with Courtney finishing 2nd moments later. For me, it was exciting to see such talent.

And I know from experience, keep on the lookout for the celebration shots. I kept looking and was rewarded. It also doesn’t hurt to be wearing my trademark lime green photo vest. These two ladies knew right where to pose for the final shot.

As a final note, Kate Courney would have her moment in the sun, winning the Women’s Pro XC Race 24 hours later at Sea Otter. Congrats to both of these awesome ladies on your respective wins!
