Time to switch gears. With the cycling road race season in the rear view mirror and fall in the air. That means cyclocross!
What is cyclocross you say? The simple answer: imagine a road race “hooks up” with a mountain bike race. The result is cyclocross: or cyclo-x, CX or ‘cross to those in the know. It’s a specialized type of bike race normally over a 1km to 3km multi lap circuit featuring varied terrain, pavement, sand, grass, dirt, mud and of coarse obstacles. Many require the racer to dismount, carry the bike, run and a bike remount. Bike handling is also a premium skill set in CX.
And nothing like starting off big with the 2017 West Sacramento Cyclocross Grand Prix (WSCGP) on Saturday, September 30th and Sunday, October 1st. This year, a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and United States Cycling Association (USAC) international event. Pretty special, and one of only two such cyclocross events out west.
For those of you who have not experienced a cyclocross event, this is a great one to witness and enjoy. First of all, viewing access. No nose bleed seats here, just up close and personal excitement. You get to see some of the top racers in the world, local racers of all levels, plus “Fun” is the key word at a CX race. Food, beverages, music and a family friendly festival atmosphere is what’s on the menu. There’s even a kids race, which is always a highlight. And best of all, admission is free!
So grab a cowbell, bring the family, come on out and enjoy the spectacle that is cyclocross.
